The airline Gol announced on Monday (24) will equip 15 Boeing 737-800 aircraft in its fleet with a new aerodynamic components designed to improve performance in long flights. This is the "Split Scimitar Winglet" component installed at the tip of the wings which helps reduce the consumption of jet fuel.

Developed by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB), the new item reduces to 1% the jet fuel expenses, which increase the load of the aircraft and its range. Because of this advantage, Gol will use this feature just in their aircraft performing long flights, especially international routes, decreasing operating costs.

The name of the new component is the design. Split The word refers to both sides, resembling a backbone and Scimitar word in Portuguese scimitar, it means an old Arab sword that has the format similar to the new winglet.

The installation of new parts being made by teams in GOL's maintenance center in Confins (MG). The forecast is to have the installation of winglets in seven new aircraft this year, and the other in 2016.

Most Gol aircraft already have conventional winglets, known as "Blended Winglet". Although the new parts are already installed and operating in an aircraft, the company still does not have pictures of it.

The new winglet used by Gol is equal to that applied by the Swedish airline TUIfly in its Boeing 737-800 (Condor)
