A new Brazilian airline load will take off next month. This is the Modern Logistics, founded by former directors ofBlue and recently opened a terminal at Viracopos airport in Campinas (SP). With colorful aircraft, the company calls itself an 'integrated logistics ", as it will offer not only the air transfers, as well as storage services and road transport charges. It will be a kind of "FedEx" national, but with the advantage of owning its own fleet in Brazil.

"All logistics operators currently existing in the country, starting with the giants FedEx, UPS and DHL, among many others, provide air transport services by hiring space in the baggage holds of passenger transport company aircraft flying in Brazil" He explained Aldaberto Febeliano, commercial vice president of Modern Logistics and marketing, in an interview with Airway .

Therefore, the operations of international logistics companies in Brazil depend spaces in commercial aircraft, for example, aircraft Gol and Tam. With a unique fleet for loads, the new company expects to streamline transportation and delivery processes of this branch. For this, the company will have the largest fleet of cargo aircraft in Brazil.

"2020 will be 36 aircraft and we are working flat out to begin the flight and ground operations in the first half of this second half," said Gerald Lee, the company's CEO and co-founder of Blue.

According to the vice president of Modern Logistics, two Boeing 737-400F (cargo version of the 737-400) will be activated by the end of this year to begin airlift operations. The first aircraft is in the final certification phase, while the second comes at the end of the year. For 2016, the company plans to strengthen the fleet with three 737-400F and two ATR-72F, which should increase the flexibility of operations to land on smaller runways.

The 737-400F can carry up to 20 tonnes of cargo with a range of approximately 4,000 km, while the ATR-72F may take 8.5 tons per 1,500 km. The aircraft will be used only for flights in Brazil. "Although the type of aircraft that we operate (the Boeing 737) is suitable for the holding of regional international routes (in South America), the company's main focus is the domestic market," says Febeliano. Large aircraft are also discarded per hour.

Air cargo market

The air cargo transport in Brazil is still very small compared to other modes such as rail and road. According to estimates of Modern Logistics, this sector accounts for only 0.4% of the total cargo transported in the country, compared to average of 2% to 3% of other large countries.

Since 2010, the Brazilian air cargo sector is stabilized at 400,000 tons of goods transported annually in the market market. Shipments freighters in trade routes in this period rose from 650 tonnes to more than 1.4 million tons by the last measurement in 2013.

"The goal of Modern Logistics is to increase this total (the share of the air cargo market) to values closer to the international standards. Not part of the company planning to be the biggest or the smallest, cargo airline in Brazil. The goal is to develop new markets, "says Febeliano. The company also does not plan at present compete contracts to operate flights to public companies like the Post.

Some of the major air cargo companies in Brazil, such as Rio Cargo and ABSA, have relatively small fleets compared the number of aircraft that Modern Logistics plans to acquire in the coming years.

Based Campinas

The Modern Logistics already has a terminal operations at Viracopos airport with 1,000 square meters and capacity to handle 80 tons of cargo per day. The construction of the structure, which contains plant and machinery to load and supply the aircraft consumed an investment of R $ 500 thousand. The area occupies the space left by Variglog (former Varig's cargo division), extinct in 2012.

The first flights departing Campinas will be to Manaus and then to Recife. In addition, the company will feature 15 distribution centers nationwide and ground transportation with strategic partners. "A Modern Logistics offer services that enable Brazilian companies to increase their scope of action, serving more distant markets in shorter periods," says the vice president of the new marketing year.
