Coffee reduces risk of disease - even decaffeinated

Moderate coffee consumption (3-5 cups per day) was associated with reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, and suicide

Drinking three to five cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of premature death from heart disease, suicide, diabetes or Parkinson's disease. Both the common version of the drink as decaffeinated are beneficial. So says a study published Monday in the journal Circulation.

"Bioactive components present in coffee reduces insulin resistance and systemic inflammation. This could explain some of our findings," said Ding Ming, the lead author of the study and a doctoral student at the Harvard Nutrition department.

The study, conducted by researchers at Harvard University in the United States, was based on reports of medical conditions and habits of 208 501 000 nurses and other health professionals, over 30 years. From this information they compared the results of people who did not drink coffee or who drank less than two cups per day with those who drank up to five cups daily.

The results showed that moderate coffee consumption was associated with reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, and suicide.Although previous studies have indicated a reduction between coffee consumption and a lower risk of cancer, this study did not find any protective effect against the the disease.

Despite the clear association, the authors point out that has not found any relation of cause and effect between coffee and reduced development of certain diseases. Yet I recommend consuming. "Regular consumption of coffee can be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet. But some populations such as pregnant women and children should beware of the high consumption from caffeine from coffee and other beverages." Said Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard.
