The federal police broke out on Thursday another phase of Operation acronym, investigating campaign irregularities and alleged bribe-taking by the governor of Minas Gerais, Fernando Pimentel (PT-MG), former Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, as well as money laundering a group of entrepreneurs who have ties to the PT.
Agents do searches on addresses of people connected to the PT, including the president of the Energy Company of Minas Gerais (Cemig), also the former minister of Mauro Borges Development. He is a friend of Pimentel and his political protégé.
The PF meets about forty search and seizure warrants in cities such as Belo Horizonte, Sao Paulo and Brasilia. The action was authorized by the Superior Court of Justice. In São Paulo, the agents perform searches on Marfrig's headquarters, one of the largest food groups in Brazil, and Odebrecht. In Rio, federal police entered the CBF headquarters in document searches on Mario Rosa, who worked at Pimentel campaign and organization of the World Cup.
The acronym initially triggered in May, also has targeted the first lady of Mines, Carolina Oliveira, and the businessman Benedito Rodrigues, the Bene, developer of Pimentel campaigns and suspected of diverting federal contracts capabilities with their companies. The investigation began because of the seizure of a private plane with 113,000 reais in cash during the elections of 2014. Bene was on the aircraft, as well as a former adviser to the Ministry of Cities who worked at Pimentel campaign.
Pimentel is investigated for receiving undue advantage of companies that maintained trade relations with the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), under the Ministry of Development, which he led from 2011 to 2014.
