Gol fail to make regular flights to the United States from February 2016. The announcement was made on Thursday by the company, which reported a net loss of 2.13 billion reais in the third quarter of the year, the highest ever registered in a fiscal quarter by the air, according to data from Economatica. The withdrawal of flights to the US market is part of a series of measures adopted by the company to try to recover its profitability.
Currently, Gol operates 14 weekly flights to Miami and Orlando, with a stop in the Caribbean. These operations are seasonal from February 19. "They will no longer be regular daily flights. We will offer these routes in the months when there are more tourist demand," he explained the president of Gol, Paul Kakinoff. In practice, the routes to the United States will act as extra flights for the high season, which can be opened (or not) to meet short-term demands.
Kakinoff said the company will continue flying to the Caribbean, but the offer should be reduced by the withdrawal of flights to the US. The company confirmed on Thursday that will fly to Cuba in 2016, still no date set, and announced plans to expand frequencies to Argentina, especially from the Northeast capitals. "The changing economic environment requires faster responses in our choice of destinations," he said.
With mesh rearrangement, the company will reduce area between 7% and 8% its offer of air tickets on international flights in the fourth quarter of this year. The company also will cut frequencies on domestic flights, while operating in any city. In all, the company will promote a reduction of 5% to 7% in domestic supply between October and December.
History - Gol began flying regularly to the United States in the second half of 2012. Since then, several companies have extended the offer on the same route. The Blue, for example, flies to Miami and Orlando Campinas since December 2014, but has delayed expansion plans for the United States. Flights to Orlando out of Guarulhos and the launch of flights to New York are in the fridge.
Already American Airlines, which offers 98 weekly flights from ten Brazilian cities, cease flying regularly to Curitiba and Campinas in February. The company says the decision is the result of studies on market performance.
