Dies at 106 years the film director Manoel de Oliveira

The director of Portuguese cinema Manoel de Oliveira died on Thursday to 106 years, reported the EFE news agency and France Presse. The filmmaker is considered the longest-serving director in the world and during his career has produced about 60 films. His last work was The Old Restelo displayed in 2014.

Manoel de Oliveira was born in Porto on December 11, 1908, and made his directorial debut at age 23 with the documentary Douro, Faina Fluvial. Actors such as the French Catherine Deneuve, American John Malkovich and Marcello Mastroianni Italian participated in some of his films during the 1980s and 1990s, contributing to the international recognition of his work. Some of his works that are worth mentioning are long as The Cannibals (1988), The Divine Comedy (1991), The Convent (1995), The Letter (1999), Word and Utopia (2000) and Magic Mirror (2005).

Among the awards he received during his career are a Lion from the Venice Film Festival Gold in 2004 and a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, both for his long career in film. Manoel de Oliveira had overcome in recent years some health problems, including umainternação hospital in 2012 due to heart failure, and other episodes in 2013.
